What a group is
A marker group is a named collection of markers of the same type. Every marker on a drawing belongs to exactly one group. The group is the level at which:
- The label is set (e.g.
C-type fitting). - The colour and opacity apply (every marker in a group shares them).
- The database link is attached (linking the group prices every marker inside).
- The scale applies, for Linear and Area groups.
- The count is reported in the Excel export.
Markers are instances, groups are types. If you have 20 of the same socket, you've got one group with 20 markers.
How groups appear in the sidebar
The right-hand sidebar shows your marker tree. The five sections (one per marker type) are listed in fixed order:
- Auto Count Symbol — Detection groups
- Count Symbol — Unit groups
- Linear Measurement — Linear groups
- Area Measurement — Area groups
- Annotations — Annotation groups
Each section has a header with the type icon, a marker count badge, and a collapse toggle. Inside the section, individual groups are listed.
What's on each group row
Going left to right:
| Element | What it is |
|---|---|
| Colour swatch / thumbnail | The group's colour, or for Detection groups the matched symbol image. Click to open the colour and appearance dropdown. |
| Link icon / | "Linked" if the group is bound to a database item; "Not linked" otherwise. Click to open the link picker. |
| Group label | Editable inline — double-click or use the dotted menu to rename. |
| Marker count | The number of markers in the group on the active drawing. |
| Expand chevron | Opens the group to show its individual markers as child rows. |
| Merge icon | Opens the merge menu to combine this group into another. Disabled when the group has 0 markers. |
| + button | For Detection groups only — enters "add markers to this group" mode (Auto Count Symbol scoped to this group). Pulses when active. |
| Dotted menu | Link Item, Visibility (Cover / Hide), Reimage Group, Delete Symbol Group, and linked-item info if bound. |

Expanding a group
Click the chevron / on the group row to show or hide the individual markers inside. Each marker appears as a child row with its position and any per-marker metadata (length for Linear, area for Area, label for Annotation text).
Clicking an individual marker child row selects it on the canvas.
Counts and badges
The number badge next to the group label is the marker count on the active drawing. Counts update live as you add, delete, or move markers.
Each section header also carries a count — the sum of its groups.
The project marker summary panel — see project marker summary — shows the equivalent counts across every drawing in the project.
Section-level visibility filtering
The marker list toolbar at the top of the sidebar has a Filter marker types button . Use it to show only certain types — for example, only Linear and Area when sense-checking measurements, hiding Detection and Unit out of the way.
The button toggles to when a filter is active.
